  3.           The recent INSIDE UFOLOGY article presented the possibility
  4. that a medical anomaly might be an "alien implant."  The "implant" was
  5. described as assuredly non-metallic (since an MRI did not "rip it right
  6. out of her") and that its removal would be extremely dangerous, because
  7. of its "proximity to the crucial nerve."
  8.           First of all--as pointed out--the M in MRI stands for
  9. magnetic.  The REAL truth is that MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance
  10. Imaging.  (Actually, it used to be called NMRI--Nuclear Magnetic
  11. Resonance Imaging, but the Nuclear was dropped for fear that the public
  12. would connote that with radiation.)  An MRI works by magnetically
  13. alligning the nuclei in each cell in a certain direction.  This allows
  14. images which are highly resolved, and tumors and anomalies are therefore
  15. seen more readily.  An MRI places NO magnetic pull on any molecule.  If
  16. this were true, an MRI would be contraindicated for any patient having
  17. any type of medical implant--a simple amalgam filling, for example.
  18.           Second, the proximity of the "implant" to the crucial nerve
  19. would not make its removal dangerous at all.  Why not?  Because there IS
  20. no crucial nerve.  In fact, if this particular patient does have a
  21. "crucial" nerve, then I believe we definitely have an alien on our
  22. hands.  Not likely.
  23.           Why am I raising a fuss about these two seemily small points?
  24. Because I feel that gross inaccuracies as these is the primary reason
  25. few serious reporters and researchers take ufology seriously.  This is
  26. not likely to change, until ufology researchers become better versed in
  27. the scientific method and the basic sciences.  Science-fiction authors,
  28. artists, and other dreamers are unlikely to help the cause of ufology by
  29. proposing preposterous explanations of scientific observations.  Contra,
  30. they are VERY likely to hurt the cause, as they become the easy targets
  31. of those who DO have the proper background and they can be easily
  32. led and manipulated.
  33.           It is not my purpose, here, to detract from ufology or from
  34. those who have a serious interest in ufology.  Doubtless, most following
  35. the recent developments are well-intentioned and sincere individuals.
  36. However, for the good of the investigation, it is necessary to be able
  37. to scientificaaly verify ALL theories and explanations if the truth is
  38. ever to be learned.
  39.           Certainly, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck,
  40. then in all probability, it's a duck.  However, during the past year such a
  41. myriad conflicting documents, theories, explanations and accusations
  42. have been circulating, that I myself find it necessary to discount
  43. almost everything.  If Moore, Lear, Cooper, and the rest have ANY real
  44. evidence, then let's see it.  Either sh*t or get off the pot.  All we
  45. have so far is a quackless duck.  The amusing question remains: where
  46. (or, more appropriately, who) are the quacks?
